Active Seniors

It’s that time of year … the days are becoming longer and summer break is nearly upon us. The sun is hanging around more each day and the temperatures are growing steadily warmer. With summer right around the corner, there is anticipation in the air to get out and be more active. Kids are out riding their bicycles until the twilight sky calls them home; the call of the ball field keeps moms and dads out late while kids play under the lights.

For seniors living in assisted and supportive living communities, activities (life enrichment) are an important part of their lives all year round. Outings and activities for seniors are planned with great thought and care – activities that will engage their minds and keep them active both mentally and physically. The age-old assumption that seniors just want to sit around and play BINGO is only a little bit true … yes, they do enjoy a spirited game of BINGO, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

Now that the weather is more accommodating, seniors in assisted and supportive living communities can do more outings away from the facility. Trips to local ball parks, zoos, orchards and restaurants are just a few of the activities that fill their calendars during the warm summer months. Planting flowers, herbs and vegetables are common activities are many of our facilities, and many of our residents have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor concerts or other musical entertainment. Families and residents alike enjoy BBQs and ice cream socials to celebrate various holidays during the summer. Some facilities are even able to take their residents to watch annual parades in their communities.
