Dehydration might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the dangers that our elderly loved ones face, but it should be a major concern. As you age, you feel thirst less strongly than when you were younger. Hot and humid weather can make you sweat more than usual and requires additional hydration to make up for lost fluids. Many medications, such as blood pressure medications, can also cause dehydration. Signs of dehydration can be hard to catch but can include:
STAYING HYDRATED
There are many benefits to staying hydrated. Ever since the revolution of sodas and flavored waters, people have strayed from drinking water like they used to. Water may be the best way to re-hydrate your body, but there are many alternatives. Fruits with high water content are a great alternative to drinking water. Many fruits like watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, and others can contribute a large amount of water to your diet. Starting your day with oatmeal can also help with hydration. Oatmeal is a hearty and filling meal! The oats absorb the water or milk they are paired with, providing hydration to your body, and satisfying your hunger. Soup is another excellent way to get hydrated and is a filling meal.
