A Caregiver’s Guide to Managing Sundowners Syndrome

Sundowners syndrome, also known as “sundowning”, commonly occurs in seniors with mid-stage to advanced Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 20% of seniors with Alzheimer’s will experience sundowning. This syndrome is characterized by confusion and agitation that increases during the late afternoon and evening hours. Other symptoms often include pacing, wandering, and anxiety. Consider the following things you can do to help manage your loved one’s symptoms:

1. Form a Daily Routine
Alzheimer’s and dementia patients often find it difficult to develop and remember new routines. Sticking to a schedule can help calm your loved one and decrease feelings of anger and confusion over new changes.

2. Minimize Stress
Stress can increase confusion and irritability, so it’s important to avoid challenging tasks that could cause frustration. Create a peaceful environment by playing relaxing music, removing distracting noises or sounds, or reading a story.

3. Provide Comfort
Take a moment and imagine how frightening it would be to lose your memory. Wouldn’t you want to be surrounded by things that are familiar and that bring you comfort? Things like cherished household items and family pictures can help your loved one feel more at ease.

4. Increase Activity
Many of those who suffer from sundowners syndrome have difficulty sleeping at night. Tiredness is also a common trigger, which can cause a terrible cycle of exhaustion. To help your loved one get a good night’s rest, make sure they stay active during the day. Instead of taking naps, go for a walk or dance with them to their favorite songs. Daily activity will not only help them sleep better, but will also benefit their overall physical health.

5. Stick to an Eating Schedule
Make sure your loved one eats meals at similar times every day. It’s also important to avoid large meals or excessive amounts of sugar during the evening, as these can make it difficult for them to fall asleep.
