Men’s Health Month

Since its inception in 1994, Men’s Health Month has been recognized each June. According to the Men’s Health Month website, the purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

As men age, the risk of various health conditions increases. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, excluding skin cancer. African-American men are at the greatest risk of developing this cancer. Screenings for prostate cancer should start at age 50, although men with additional risk factors should talk to their doctor about starting at an earlier age.

Another big health concern for men is getting enough sleep. Insufficient sleep is associated with a multitude of chronic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and obesity. It is recommended that an adult man get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

So how can men become healthier? Embracing a healthy lifestyle is very important. Eating healthy, stopping a smoking habit and being more active are all steps men can take to improve their overall health. These healthier habits will help boost the immune system and provide better management of chronic medical conditions. An increased mental acuteness and higher energy levels will also be results of an improved lifestyle. And it always goes without saying – eliminate stress as much as possible.

It’s important for men of all ages to pay attention to any signs or symptoms that are out of the ordinary. See your doctor for regular visits; annual check-ups may reveal medical conditions where symptoms have not yet manifested. Keep track of things like your blood pressure and cholesterol so positive steps can be taken if needed to get those numbers into a healthy range.

You can show your support for Men’s Health Month by participating in the “Wear Blue” campaign: held on Friday, June 16th. This event is sponsored by the Men’s Health Network whose mission is to reach men and their families with health awareness messages where they live, work, pray and play.
