Tips for Seniors Preparing for the Fall

The Midwest offers a beautiful transition from summer to fall. Usually, there is a change of weather from the summer heat to decreasing temperatures that let us show off some of our favorite fall attire. However, there are some things that seniors should do to safely prepare for this new season and the changes that come with it. This can include:

Wearing Proper Clothing

The fall can be a confusing time when it comes to the weather. As the seasons start to change, temperatures can become unpredictable. One day could require a t-shirt, and the next could require a heavy jacket. It’s important to check the weather before going out and dress accordingly.

Preparing for Wind

Fall tends to be a windy season in the Midwest. Most of the time, this does not pose much of a risk. However, there are days when winds may get to dangerous speeds. Seniors should try not to go out on days like these as it may cause someone unstable to fall over. It’s important to use your best judgment on whether you should go out or not. Just remember, it’s always better to be safe and err on the side of caution!

Ensuring Your Home is Warm

We obviously don’t use the heater too much during the summer. This means that the heater goes several months without ever turning on. Therefore, it’s good to get your heater checked out before the colder weather hits to ensure you’re not in a pickle when trying to heat your home for the first time of the season.

Servicing Your Gutters

Everyone loves the changing of the leaves and the beautiful aesthetic it gives. No one loves going through the mess that the leaves bring with them. One thing people commonly forget about is that leaves clog gutters. Over time this can lead to water running out the sides of them, which can cause a long list of problems like destroying foundations. Therefore, seniors who live independently should get their gutters cleaned by someone at least once a year.

Adjusting Driving Times

Daylight savings time occurs during the middle of fall each year. This means one less hour of daylight. This can be an issue for drivers who have difficulty seeing at night. Drivers who have trouble with this should adjust their schedules so that they’re not on the road during dark hours. If there is no other choice but to drive, it’s important to use caution and take it slow.
