What is Downsizing?

When you hear the word downsizing or rightsizing, our minds generally jump to employment. And downsizing in employment isn’t usually a good thing. But in the world of senior care, downsizing is a very different and often positive activity.

There is a point in nearly every person’s life when they realize they have too many things or the place they live is too large. Perhaps you’re finally empty-nesters, and you don’t need a 5-bedroom home anymore, or you’ve decided that it’s time to move to independent or assisted living. If your health or mobility changes, you may need to rearrange your living space to accommodate supportive equipment like walkers or wheelchairs. Maybe you just want to go through and pare down all of the “stuff” you’ve been accumulating all your life. These are the perfect times to downsize.

Simply put, downsizing is prioritizing. What do you want to keep in the house versus put in storage? What do you want to hand down to loved ones or donate? Or what isn’t worth keeping at all? After a lifetime of collection, these questions can feel daunting.

That’s why Evergreen Senior Living in Chillicothe works with a trusted partner who can assist any of our new community members in the task of downsizing before moving into our community. Together with our residents and families, they:

  • Provide gentle guidance in sorting items to either keep, sell, donate or send to family members.
  • Make the necessary arrangements to either ship, sell, or donate unwanted items.
  • Coordinate the services of professionals to make necessary modifications according to an “Age In Place” plan.
  • Develop a floor plan either in their new setting
  • Interview and schedule movers
