What You Should Know About Allergies and the Elderly

While some of us are enjoying the warmer weather, others are suffering from seasonal allergies. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. While seasonal allergies are not life-threatening, many seniors tend to have chronic illnesses, which can complicate their symptoms and make them more challenging to manage.

What are the Symptoms?
Allergies affect everyone differently. Itchy eyes, runny nose, congestion, headaches, and sneezing are all symptoms to look out for. If you notice your senior developing allergies, encourage them to see their doctor. If your loved one has Alzheimer’s disease, they may find it difficult to remember they have these symptoms and may not express how they feel. As a caregiver, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs of allergies because your loved one may not view them as something to be concerned about.

Minimize Discomfort Caused by Allergies:
Allergies are often treated with an antihistamine, but these can raise blood pressure, cause drowsiness (which can lead to falls), and negatively interact with other medications. Antihistamines are not always ideal for seniors. However, there are some medication-free options that can help fight irritating allergy symptoms:

1. Keep your doors and windows closed
Most allergens such as pollen and dust are from the outdoors. By keeping your doors and windows closed you can avoid letting those allergens inside your home.

2. Shower after being outdoors
When you come inside, you bring pieces of the outside world with you. Consider showering and changing clothes when you come inside to prevent allergens from affecting you.

3. Use steam
Steam can help release the congestion in your nose and chest. Take a hot shower or hold your head over a bowl or sink full of warm water with a towel over your head to trap the steam. This can loosen up the congestion, helping seniors breathe with ease.

4. Consider an air purifier
Air purifiers can help remove allergens and toxins from the air and prevent it from circulating your home.
