Veteran’s Benefits for Assisted & Supportive Living

The Census Bureau estimates there are nearly 750,000 veterans living in Illinois today. A large number of them served during the Vietnam War and are at the age when an assisted living or supportive living community might be appropriate.

Assisted living and supportive living provide private apartments where seniors can live in a community of their peers. Services are personalized according to their particular needs and wants. They can receive as much or as little help as they want. Each care plan is individualized.

Assisted or supportive living communities bridge the gap between living alone and needing more care like in a skilled nursing facility. Seniors who live in these communities come and go as they please. There are endless possibilities for events and outings that keep seniors active and engaged in meaningful activities.

Paying for Care

Through their honorable service, veterans have earned many state and national benefits. Veteran’s benefits can help with the financial cost of assisted or supportive living. Evergreen Senior Living communities do not require a long-term commitment. The lease is month-to-month with no hidden fees or maintenance fees.

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA pension to offset the expenses of long-term care, assisted living and home health care. Serving during wartime is required to qualify for these benefits.

The local Veterans Administration office will be able to help with questions and the application for benefits.Your local government website should have the information for the Veterans Administration office in your area. If you are unable to find information there, contact the Evergreen Senior Living community in your area and they can direct you to the appropriate agency that will help you.

Veteran’s Benefits Assessment

When you meet with the Veteran’s Administration office, you will need to bring:

• Military Discharge papers
• Marriage certificate if you are the spouse and not the person who served

The assessment will cover:

• Income and Assets (not including your home)
• Cost of care that you are seeking (assisted or supportive living cost plus medical expenses)
• Your health condition

In addition to Veteran’s benefits, assisted and supportive living communities accept private pay, Medicaid (supportive living only) and long-term care benefits.
