The winter months in the Midwest can bring brutally cold weather. We all know the feeling of the unbearably chilling air hitting us in the face while we dream of those warm sunny days. During these times, the saying “cold to the bone” truly comes to life. It’s important to stay safe as long periods of exposure to the cold can pose risks to your health. Older adults tend to lose body heat faster and must take more caution. Here are some cold-weather safety tips for seniors.
Bundling Up
Hypothermia and frostbite are the two most common conditions suffered from exposure to the cold. Dressing accordingly to the weather is the number one most important method of preventing either of these. It’s important to have a warm jacket, gloves, a hat, warm socks, boots, etc. Wearing the proper clothing keeps you warm and safe.
Keeping Your Home Warm
We all like to try and save money during the winter by keeping the heating bill down. However, it’s important to keep the thermostat in your home no lower than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping the thermostat lower than this, in some cases, can cause hypothermia, particularly if someone is already exposed to prolonged cold weather. A higher temperature also lowers the risk of pipes freezing.
Avoiding Driving in the Snow
Snowstorms cause thousands of accidents each year. Even the best drivers get in accidents during difficult driving conditions. Older adults should try to avoid driving during these times at all costs. In the event of an accident during a snowstorm, it could take first responders much longer to arrive on the scene. If your car isn’t functioning, the heat won’t work, causing those involved to wait in the elements.
Refraining From Going Out at All During Extreme Cold
It’s not a good idea for anyone to go out during freezing temperatures. Especially seniors. In the event of a fall due to slippery conditions with no one around to help, body heat would begin to diminish quickly, with hypothermia possibly setting in. Therefore, it’s good to avoid leaving home when temperatures are dangerously low.
