The holiday season is approaching quicker than we can say, “Santa Claus!” The holidays are all about spending time together, feeling included, and enjoying the good company – even if it’s done virtually this year. This time of year can be fun for seniors, even if they have physical or cognitive limitations. As people start to spend more time with family during this time of the year, here are some great activities for you to engage in this holiday season with your seniors:
Make a Christmas wreath – Involve your creativity and your sense of fun!
Play simple card games or board games –Stimulate the brain and good friendly competition!
Have a family Christmas movie night – And cozy up family time with some hot cocoa and warm blankets to cuddle under!
Bake family traditional cookies – This activity is not only delicious but brings back some great memories!
Prompt kids to ask about “the olden days” – A great conversation starter, this helps kids learn about their grandparents’ youth!
Remember to encourage seniors to join in on the holiday festivities whenever possible but be conscious not to overdo it. A lot of these fun activities are relaxing and can be easily modified to fit your seniors’ abilities and energy level. Still, be on the lookout for signs of fatigue and proactively suggest breaks or a mid-day nap.
If your senior has dementia or Alzheimer’s, here are special, modified activities to avoid overstimulation!
Keep groups small – It’s best to avoid too many people. Instead of hosting one big party, have a couple of casual get-togethers with smaller groups!
Schedule activities for their best time of day – Choose meaningful holiday activities and schedule those activities when your senior is most likely to participate successfully!
Plan activities your senior enjoys – This will help your senior feel included! Whether it be baking, watching football, or something as simple as playing songs that your senior loves!
A quick reminder: Take a short break yourself when needed, no matter how brief. This allows you to recharge, and you’ll be better able to help your senior have the best holiday!
