Preventing the 3 Most Common Senior Health Issues

It’s natural that the older we get, the more we are prone to health issues. However, taking the necessary steps toward prevention can help your senior enjoy healthy aging! Here are a few of the most common health issues and ways to avoid them:

1. Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and is caused by plaque build-up in the arteries and blood vessels leading to the heart. Although age and heredity are two prominent factors in contracting this disease, it’s still possible to prevent by:

  • Exercising regularly (at least 150 minutes per week)
  • Maintaining a healthy diet and weight by choosing foods that are low in saturated fats, sugars, and sodium
  • Reducing stress
  • Getting annual exams by a doctor to look for abnormalities and other risk factors

2. Arthritis

Arthritis affects approximately 50% of adults 65 years of age and older. Arthritis is characterized by joint deterioration and can affect the hips, spine, knees, hands, and feet. The three main types include:

  • Osteoarthritis – occurs when bone cartilage breaks down causing the bones to rub together
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune disease that causes joint pain and damage
  • Psoriatic arthritis – a condition combining swollen and sore joints with psoriasis

You can help prevent arthritis by:

  • Eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, as they reduce inflammation within the body
  • Controlling your body weight to lessen the pressure on the joints
  • Participating in aerobic exercise (walking, swimming, etc.) and stretching to de-stress the joints

3. Alzheimer’s Disease

Approximately one in ten Americans 65 and older have Alzheimer’s. This disease causes a progressive deterioration of the memory and mental function and develops based on a variety of risk factors such as age, genetics, and the environment.

A few healthy habits that can help your senior avoid this disease include:

  • Incorporating exercise into the daily routine
  • Following a Mediterranean diet that limits red meats and emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and healthy fats
  • Getting at least 8 hours of sleep each day
  • Connecting socially to stimulate brain activity

Overall, one of the best ways for your loved one to experience healthy aging is awareness! Knowing and understanding the most common senior health problems can help your senior in adopting behaviors that can effectively prevent them.
