Respite Care

What is Respite Care, and to whom does it apply? Respite Care provides temporary care in a private, secure apartment so the primary caregiver can take a break from their caregiving duties. The person receiving care is admitted to our community and will receive all the same care and benefits as a longer-term resident would receive. Respite care is available at our Evergreen Senior Living communities in Chillicothe, Decatur and Orland Park.

For the caregiver, this respite from their normal duties of providing care and support can be invaluable. Caring for a loved one at home can be very rewarding, and is a choice many people make in order to keep their loved one in their home. However, the constant medical, emotional and physical duties that are required can leave the caregiver feeling drained and burned out, especially if round-the-clock care is required.

It is important that the person providing care takes time for themselves – to rejuvenate their energy and spirit, as well as to take care of the other duties in their own life. Very often, caregivers feel guilty if they leave their loved one in order to do anything besides provide care. However, it is crucial that caregivers do have some time away to ensure they are able to continue providing that care and take care of themselves at the same time.

A break from their normal routine and the opportunity to meet new people and try new activities can also be exciting and restorative for the person receiving care. Persons admitted for respite care have access to all the activities and events planned in our communities and are encouraged to participate.
