Volunteer to Help Seniors During the Holidays

Evergreen Senior Living Category   December 01, 2017

Thanksgiving is over, and it’s officially the Christmas holiday season. Shopping malls are becoming more crowded, the to-do lists are growing longer and the excitement for the big day is mounting. The holidays can be a wonderful time for family traditions (both new and established) and sharing the holiday spirit with others. However, the seasonal delights can be a difficult time for some elderly people, especially if they live alone or do not have any family nearby with whom to celebrate. While the weeks leading up to December 25th may seem busier than ever, carving out some time to devote to a person who may otherwise be lost in the shuffle can be one of the greatest gifts of the season.

Seniors living in an Evergreen Senior Living community have the benefit of friendship from their neighbors and the devoted wellness team. The caregiving staff provides medical support, but also support for their emotional and social needs. Three square meals a day can be shared with friends or enjoyed in the comfort of their own apartment. The building’s maintenance staff takes care of all the upkeep for a resident’s apartment, no snowy sidewalks to shovel or grass to mow. However, for elderly persons living alone in their home, they do not have this support system and could benefit from a little help from community members, especially if they do not have any family nearby.

Some of the main concerns for seniors living alone or without family nearby include malnourishment, hunger and depression. It can be a challenge for seniors to go grocery shopping, especially during the winter months when the risk of a fall or accident is greater. They may be unable to drive and the idea of taking public transportation or another form of paid transport can be intimidating. Medical conditions like arthritis or limited mobility can add another level of challenge for their ability to do things on their own. If finances are tight, they may have to make the choice between paying for their medications or paying for food.

You may not have or know of any elderly neighbors who face these challenges, but you can still help. You can connect with a local organization like Meals on Wheels or other senior-focused assistance groups to volunteer your time. While they often need help with household chores, grocery shopping or cooking meals, sometimes the companionship of another person is the greatest gift you can offer.

The holidays can be a sad time for persons who have lost a beloved spouse, so the joy of the season is lost for them. Volunteer to provide some quality one-on-one time with someone who may be lonely. Senior depression and even suicide are serious issues that many of our elders face, but by devoting time to remind them how much they matter can make a huge impact. Even dropping off cookies or a hot meal with a few minutes of conversation can make a big difference to a senior living alone.

While the holidays put a spotlight on the need for volunteers, seniors need our help all year long. If you can make volunteering a regular part of your routine, both you and the senior recipient will reap big rewards.
