When your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other memory care issues, the decision to move them from home care to a care community can be challenging.
As professionals caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, we understand the challenges that come with a move. Transfer trauma can occur when a senior, often in the early stages of dementia, moves from their lifelong home into a new community. At The Legacy: Memory Care, our experienced staff will work closely with the senior and his or her family to ensure a successful transition.
The way dementia affects each senior is different, and so the transition for each must be tailored to best suit their needs. This means that communication and details are key. The staff at The Legacy: Memory Care will work very closely with the senior and their loved ones to determine things like:
- The senior’s best time of day
- Daily activities to encourage that give them a sense of purpose
- How to decorate their space to make it personal
- The best way for you to leave the community once your loved one arrives
- How frequently family should visit following the move
At The Legacy, we know that the transition can be as challenging for the loved ones and caregivers as it is for the senior. We recommend that you have someone to support you on moving day. Feelings of grief and guilt, loss and relief are all normal as you transition your loved one to full-time care. We encourage loved ones to take part in support groups for the families of those affected with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
